The 1/2 ton WC axles have the brake drum semi-permanently mounted BEHIND the drum, not in front like the 3/4ton WC, M37 or the post-war PW's.

Thus, you have to remove the axle shaft, then remove the bearing adjusting nuts. The whole hub & brake drum assembly then slides off in one piece, if the outer bearing and cone allow it to do so.

The brake drum is held to the hub by the wheel studs. In theory, the studs could be pressed out, the drum swapped, and the studs prssed back in. However, I have never seen a seperate brake drum available. Only drum/hub assemblies.

The 3/4 ton brake drum is on the outside of the hub. It can be removed without disturbing the hub bearings. This is an important feature for being able to do fast brake repairs or to simply clean mud out.

Tech Manual TM 10-1153 covers the procedure for overhauling the brakes and adjusting the wheel bearings. Portrayal Press shoul have reproduction manuals.
