I can see THREE scenarios that will allow over filling of the diff.
1. The truck was on a incline side to side. Given the length of the axle tubes it woul not take much of an incline to get another quart or two into the diff.
2. The truck is inclined front down. This would give maybe up to a quart depending on how much of an incline.
3. Strill possible but not to likely, Some one had a oil canister with a pump and just pumped and extra amount in and put the plug in quickly.
Also I aggree with Steve, The diff will run under preasure if the vent hole is plugged, because of the heat build up.
