I just noticed that you are considering a 1989 Ford and here I was going off on the Powerstroke, not available until 1995. The old 7.3s had mechanical injection and the Banks kits are quite good, especially the more recent ones. They actually produce better performance than a new Powerstroke, although most analysts belive that engine life is reduced by about 10%-20%. Without the turbo kit, the old 7.3 Navistar is a pig, a reliable pig, but a pig just the same. Ford did offer the 7.3 with an ATS Turbo kit installed at the factory in 1994 and early 1995 as a stop-gap until the Powerstokes became available. Those are uncommon but are apparently good setups. I have never driven one.
