In Kansas is used to be a bill of sale was fine for anything over I think 30 years old. But they stopped doing that since some stealing was going on. In Kansas now you have to do whats called a "Quite Title" thru the courts. You can have a Lawyer do it or you can do it yourself. You have to file papers with the court stating you want a title for the vehicle. Then you have to post a legal notice in the newspaper 1 day a week for 3 weeks. If no one protests then the judge signs off and you can go get your title and tags. The newspaper has to be a public paper. You are better off running it in some podunk town newspaper and not the wallstreet journal. The less people see it the less someone could protest.
Expenses are what ever your court filing fee is. Its like 110$ in Kansas and then the newspaper ad cost.
