Matt, that was me that made the comments about heat treating. I was just speculating that old trucks are more forgiving of abusive modifications like drilling and welding on the frames, because the frames are more over-designed and (I thought) were not heat-treated. I realize there are lots of kinds of heat treatment, and drawing and annealing are heat treatments too.
You might be right about the mechanicals being better on the new trucks too. If that's so, I still wish a person could buy one without all the plastic and electronics.
