Almost all engine blocks, crankshafts, etc..., today are cast using the "lost foam" method. Also known as "expendable pattern casting - EPC".

It's a facsinating subject - I have looked into it for possibly casting my own intake and exhaust manifolds. I also thought of using it to cast a head as well.

The great thing about lost foam casting is the parts can be extremely complex without requiring multipart dies or core pulls. Also the parts are "near net" and achieved tolerances can be in the 1,000ths so that no or little additional machining is required.
