Newer gas formulated with MTBE (common in big cities)is especially bad about contaminating shallow wells. As little as 15 gallons spilled in the wrong place could result in your drinking water smelling and tasting like gas for decades. That would be one reason not to dump it on a rainy day, when it can get washed away (both down the creek and into the ground)with the rain.
