NP540 vs. NP435 - Overdrive??

I have a technical question I hope someone can help me with. Two transmissions were offered on the Sweptside Era 1960's W500's, a standard four-speed NP435 (which I guess was the same one used on that era's
W100-W300) and the optional NP540, a five-speed. Does anyone know if the 540 was
basically a 435 with an extra gear mixed into it, or was it an overdrive transmission allowing higher road speeds? I have heard the former is true (and Joe C. confirms he believes this is the case), just an extra gear to go through but not an overdrive. Thanks for any input.
