I have worked on MANY full-floating axles and have never used a socket for the nut on the spindle. Always a hammer and chisel or punch. Never had a problem. Just tighten it until it slows the rotation of the drum down (too tight). Then back it off until it turns freely and smoothly. Viola. Done.
