Can't help you with measurements for placement right now, but I would suggest the ground wire. I rebuilt mine, put them on... nothing. Tried to get a good solid ground going, played and played with them, they work now... and if they don't, you just have wiggle them or give them a little WACK!! I should have ran a simple ground wire, so I would agree with you and suggest a ground wire. Can't hurt!
