David, I had always wondered why some vehicles were positive ground instead of negative ground. I called a local legend who has worked on everything imaginable during his lifetime. He could not answer my question, per se. But, he did dig out a mid '50s electrical manual and read a few paragraphs to me over the phone. What he read, straight from the manual, about converting from positive to negative ground was almost word for word to your instructions above. I would say your answer was right on the money unless someone else has a better source of information.
