Yes, you are going to need a torque converter for a small block chevy gas engine for a 700R4 Automatic. You MIGHT be able to find a good used one, but that is risky, and if you do go used, flush it out really good before you install it.
The Diesel torque converter stalls the gas engine because it is designed to engage the trans at lower RPMs of the Diesel, and this is where the diesel has its torque range.
