Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but on an old rig with a standard generator and no electronics (no radio, etc) all you have to do is hook the battery up the other way around and then polarize the generator prior to starting the truck. To polarize it, just momentarily touch the field terminal to the plus terminal of the battery. This magnetizes the iron in the generator the right direction so that when it starts turning it will make the current go into the generator the right way. If you don't polarize it, it might work okay, or the generator might fight the battery, to the detriment of both.
