Easier way on the operator and the rig is to ground one twelve volt cable then touch the other to the starter or the starter side of the solenoid. Assuming you have enough six volt battery to run the ignition the only thing you have twelve volts on is the starter and starters don't know from polarity.
The post on battery cable size is right on. You want no less than two gauge cables on both sides. Those twelve volt cables will drag you system down.
