Front main seal

In one of my 230 engine manuals, it says I should use a centering tool to center the front seal (and timing cover) over the crankshaft before bolting the timing cover onto the engine. I don't have a centering tool, but it seems to me that I could insert the front pulley into the seal and tighten the pulley in place before tightening the timing cover bolts. It seems that this would get the timing cover and seal located just fine.

What do you folks think?
