Hi Dave

In addition to PW I also play with old Hit and Miss engines...... I have a "buzz" saw flat belt driven.....powered from a WC Allis-Chalmers 4 cyl. 26 more or less horsepower..... now I am getting there....

The buzz saw has babbit bearings with the cast iron supports..... on top is a little door...oval shape....3 inches long 3/4 inch wide...... it is filled loosely with old wool or cotton fibers .... I have used various oil mixture combinations.... and they all seem to leak as it gets warm...... I have now settled on using the old STP right out of the container.... it is the thickest gummiest oil I could find..... every now and then you may need to tighten up the nuts on the cast iron caps to take up the slack..... quarter turn... it compresses the paper shims between the caps...... I run the saw fairly fast so that it will not bog down on large green logs and the bearing caps never get hot enough to the touch....... we usually cut for non stop for about an hour.... fill a trailer... take a break and check the oilers for top off.

Personnaly I would be afraid using grease unless it had a very low melting point and could flow easily.....

My greasy 2 cents worth....

Bob C.
