First you must understand why hubs are installed. They allow the front wheels and tires to rotate without the encumberence of the gears and bearings and axles that do the driving. Even when the four wheel drive lever is not engaged, all those parts turn, causing drag on the power train. Disengaging all this provides a free rolling effect, and the truck seems lighter and more powerful. My F350 has a 428 in it and it doesn't know about the extra weight it's pushing and the mileage is lousy no matter what, but the flathead six will like the difference.
