I have 1951 Plymouth car with 251 flathead six Chrysler engine, 1951 Dodge truck 218 flathead six engine, along with several parts vehicles. All I know is that the element in the oil bath air cleaners were completely disintegrated. I had several types of oil bath air cleaners, some you could take the element out and some the element was sealed in with the housing crimped over. After grinding off the crimp, I got the element out and found the horsehair like material to be totally rotten and falling apart. I converted one to a paper air filter and I'm satisfied with it. The old elements are extremely difficult to clean since most are permanently sealed in the housing.
