Oil Bath Air Cleaner

I have a '52 230 w/the original oil bath air cleaner on it. It is the larger of the two oil bath air cleaners I know of. I was wondering if it is normal for there to be oil residue inside the throte of the carb? I noticed that the inside of the carb was coated with oil when I cleaned the oil out of the cleaner. Is this normal or is there a problem?
