An interesting point regarding dynamic compression ratio. Breathing is poor but the valve timing has very little overlap. Thus you don't get "leakage" of the charge and lack of this leakage tends to increase the dynamic compression ratio.

It would be interesting to determine combustion chamber pressure as a function of rpm and static compression ratio and compare this with more modern engines.

I would think the torque would be an indirect measure of this, but would require some adjustments and interpretation to allow direct comparison of the dynamic compression ratio.

And on a slightly different issue, I have never heard pinging on any flathead I had, no matter the timing or quality of gas. This includes some with 60 thou off the head. In my experience, these engines are very resistant to pinging....have others found something different?
