Fresh oil is tastless (like crisco), old oil gets bitter, like brake fluid. Modern oil is loaded with anti-oxidents for newer, high temp engines and I think would suffer very little breakdown while sitting in your drivewaym, even factory reccommendations are for 7,000 miles or more.

Re: filters, if you've only driven 500 miles, it has only accumulated 500 miles of crud.

Re: costs, every 1,000 miles, times 100,000 miles at $20 each, equals one extra new engine.
