On the right side of thr engine, under the exhaust manifold is a port in the block. This should have either a 1 1/4 pipe that goes below the pan level (road draft tube) or a pcv valve and plumbing that goes into the intake manifold. Whichever system you have, dissassemble it and clean it out. This is the vent for your crankcase fumes, the pcv system will clog itself, the road draft tube will get hornet nests in it.

Crank case ventilation has a lot to do with oil sludge-ing up. Since blow-by has been exposed to heat and pressure,(similar to what a refinery does) it isn't just gasoline anymore- it has been changed to tar and other pollutants. Even on these old trucks, adding a pcv system would benefit both the oil you lube with and the air we all breath.(but it won't fix bad rings!
