When they're still sitting there, six months from now, go try again. Or, keep in contact with him (enough to let him know you're serious, but not enough to annoy him) stopping occasionally to look at them and talk to him (without seeming too eager! Fine-line there). He might come around!
Then again,... they might sit there and rust away...
