Silicone carbide is the fastest cutting of the blasting media. It's probably the most commonly used in the ship building industry & for heavy industrial uses. It will work on your fram etc....but I don't recommend it. Too course...even the super fine will leave your metal rough & essentially damaged.
The plastic & walnut shell products are the best for restoration purposes if you don't want to distort & damage your parts. Unfortunately they don't work well on rust, so there are places where sand can be usefull. If you have a self contained area & fresh air respirator, you can't beat the silica sands for performance & finish. You can get Silica sand as fine as flour, or course enough to remove the heaviest scale, & it's dirt cheap. Unfortunately it's become somewhat of the asbestos of the blasting medias & the health board will tell you you'll get silicosis of the lungs from it, but then Epoxy paints are just as bad...if not much worse.
If proper protection is used there's nothing wrong many dangerous products....including guns!
