I have seen PTO's used on the transfer case with very good results. This allows you to use the vehicles transmission to add 4 speeds forward and 1 in reverse to the function of the PTO, very versatile. My VD-21 2X4 Dodge truck originally had a single speed PTO mounted on the right hand side which powered a spray pump. I still have the PTO and pump and I know it worked very well because it was used on my parent's ranch as a spray truck for decades.
