What is-black glassy blasting media called ?

I have seen at many large fab shops piles of black glassy looking sand that are used to blast the finished producty before it is primered and painted. I've heard names like black beauty but what is this media actually called and what is it made of? I've been told it was actually laxa sand? Are there any draw backs to using this type media on PW frames ,body panels etc. ?
