M880 Transfer case

I think I have traced a noise on my M880 to the NP203. It started as a speedometer type sound when coasting only, it now also includes a pulsating chu-chu type sound under power. The sound stops at under 15-20 mph. The sound is much the same with either front wheel spinning, or with the front drive shaft off. With just the rear wheels off the ground and spinning, the sound is not there. The fluid level in the case is at the inspection hole. Does anybody know what is probably wrong with the transfer case, and how long it will run like this? My guess is that it is the chain or one of the bearing groups.
