I picked up a bolt-on classV hitch at a junk yard off of a 2001 Ram 1500 pick-up (like brand new including RV wiring connector & harness for $50). It will bolt to the bottom of the frame rail with 3 bolts each side (with a little inginuity added). It has about a 6 inch drop (top of receiver to bottom of frame rail) or so, which is just what I need to tuck nicely away under and clear the 35 gal gas tank I am installing. I need to install the hitch after I install my used (stock) bed so I get the mounting proportion correct. My PW used to be a firetruck and the old custom firetruck bed is removed and no longer a part of the equasion. The receiver will also provide "skid-plate" like protection for the 35 gallon neoprine gas tank (out of a '79 RamCharger). There's no make/model on the hitch... it was factory installed on the 2001. Sooo all the add-on is still Dodge/Chrysler :) This enables me to leave the original pintle on. If I need height adjustment I will use my (12") adjustable hitch that goes into the receiver. I have never been fortunate to have two trailers with the same height requirement, all needing a different height or ball requirement. The adjustable is the best thing yet! This is all a bolt-on solution. I will persue the custom made hitch (mounted in the Pintle hitch hole) for my other project PW, but not this year. First the 354 HEMI install, then the disc brakes, then the mods, then the HILLS :) I'm getting it ready for the 2003 First Annual Hollister Hills Rally :) and I'm gonna TAKE TRUCK HILL then!
