This explanation sounds correct. I have taken parts off a junkyard W400 to go on my 77 W300. Everything seemed to be the same.

I have a 1 1/2 ton GMC and it's WAY heavier than the W400. The 1 1/2 ton is closer to my W500 in size of axles, brake drums, 20 inch wheels etc. They make the W400 look like a car.
