I have a niece who's husband has a Model A that runs the 8V battery. It does help in starting the engine. What a lot of car/truck enthusists over look is the condition of the starter. When the starter bushings get worn, the armature starts rubbing aginst the pole shoes. This creates a drag that the the starter has to fight while trying to turn over the engine. Over time the conditions gets worst, and even with a new battery, the starter turns engine slower. The best thing to do is pull the starter, take it apart. If it's draging, you'll see shinny areas on the above parts. When you reassemble with new parts, use a good mixture of graphit and grease together. With a starter in good condition, it will do the job, even with a 6V battery.
