The "little spring thing" is a wire wound resistor. My WM-300, 1970, has 2 wire wound resistors mounted on the stock heater switch.

The switch is jumpered so that on HIGH blower, none of the resistors are used, on med blower, one resistor is used and on low speed, both resistors are in the circuit.

The aftermarket heater controls that are variable speed, have a large continous wire wound resistor with a slider tap hooked to the control knob. As you turn the knob, you change the resistance and thus the voltage =
speed of the blower.
