Need heater motor help.

I am re-building my Mopar heater for my '54 C1PW. I briefly hooked it up to a 12 volt battery to see if it works and it runs A-OK. BUT, my PW is converted to 12 volt. So what do I do to hook it up to a 12 vt. system AND what is that little funny looking spring apparatus on the inlet cord?
