Hi George!
No older than me, but hydroforming uses high pressure fluid instead of casting to form the metal parts while the metal is still molten. I just sort of glaze over after that, but both gm & Dodge and most metalurgist swear by the technique for uniformity, quality control and strenght. The problem with it in the past has been the cost and speed of the process, apparently computerized robots have made this more economical to do on a mass production basis.
Now my Power Wagon frame on the other hand, looks like it was built by a blacksmith on an anvil, : )
