How about a much user friendly product that will not only help you remove the rust, but will forestall more developing for some time after you've used it and decided what to coat your tools with?
The problem with the acid formulas is that they don't provide any "time" protection and they actually leave a residue that can interfere with paint adhesion - if you head in that direction.
