I use a dog whistle. Remove #1 spark plug and screw in an adapter such as a compression tester. Hook a short hose between the adapter and the whistle. Turn the engine by hand, the whistle will abruptly go silent when the piston reaches the top of the stroke.
You can make an adapter out of an old spark plug also.
