Pulling the head would be the cleanest way to figure out for sure what's going on. And fortunately it's easy on a flat-head compared to a modern engine. Good to know the sealer worked to salvage the old gasket. What is this "aviation sealer", though? I've used the spray on permatex "copper coat" and still have it on hand.
