318's generally have low compression because the factory piston was "down in the hole" and the combustion chambers were open. A good head to use is the mid to late 80's "302" casting head that had a much better closed chamber and would raise compression to about 9:1 which is fine for pump gas. Also, the 318 magnum head is a good head but will require changing from shaft rockers to stud rockers, but these heads are available new.
