I'm not familiar with Cali, but I agree natural gas is a cleaner form of energy, and produced from crude oil, that will keep politicians from states with economy heavy with refineries happy.
I think the Billions spent looking at the stars to find out how the earth was "born", should be matched with research how humankind can survive with its population growth, dealing with food production, fresh water, waste reduction, at least as long as it takes till humankind kills off others with conflicting ideals, religion, energy rich land.
As George Carlin said the earth has lasted and evolved for billions of years, species have evolved and become extinct for nearly as many years before mankind existed. How do people think humans are killing the earth. Just that mankind will become extinct as the earth continues to evolves.
