I opted for leaving the patina on because I wanted to show that this wasn’t some pampered pet that only gets used a couple of times a year in a parade, also putting a good paint job on is a LOT of work, and with a nice paint job I’d be reluctant to run the beast through the brush. I used Flood Penetrol on mine and I’m happy with the results so far, but the Penetrol hasn’t been on long enough to give any kind of life data. There was almost no original paint showing on my ’51 FFPW, most of the body was coated with a gray and then a red primer that had oxidized greatly over the years, so the “patina” is rather interesting. I prepared the surfaces by scrubbing them down with AfterBlast from Eastwood and applied the Penetrol with a brush. The Penetrol did soak into the primer rather well and I’m optimistic that it will provide protection for a number of years.
