I should go the full length of the latch. Look at the lines of the cowl and door, is there equal spacing down the side? If not you may have to tighten the top or bottom hinge by removing it and striking it at the area the pin goes through with a hammer to tighten it for a tighter pin fit for better door alignment. It sounds as though it might be a worn top hinge.
