If you do decide to get an adapter, these guys are great. They rebuilt my 54 PW Speedometer, made a new cable with metal sheath, and even shortened the OEM cable a foot. This allowed me to install the adapter and they made a separate one-foot piece to complete the work. Their web site list info on how to calculate the adapter ratio or they will help you out.
