According to the 47 - 56 parts book, two cannisters were used, the sealed filter and the sock filter. Sock cannister used two covers: "T" handle and Bolt. At some point maybe the filter was changed to a cartridge type element, but the book doesn't show it. Maybe owners just changed out the sealed type for something easier to use, who knows.
You're fine changing to the sock type, but I would also want to change the oil pump from the internal gear type, if your engine has that, to the rotor set design (more pressure).
