Marty,
When I was wheeling with friends out in the Black Hills 5 years ago, my truck (stock 52 PW) for the first time started acting like it had vapor lock; sputtering, missing at speed particularly but also at high idle when hot. It was a hot day, but I still wondered what was up because it never did that before in hot weather.
Anyway I got home and checked everything and also read in the archives. There was mention of the stone filter and cleaning it with carb cleaner.
I took the stone filter out and on the outside IT DID NOT look dirty. I put it in a bowl of carb cleaner and within 10 minuets it looked like it was in ice tea! I dumped that after several hours and replaced the cleaner and the resulting brown color change was a lot less. The third bath did not show color change.
I reinstalled the stone filter and it ran completely normal!
I also got a spare stone filter from Tom P to carry at all times.
its an easy thing to check.
