As a former shop teacher I did it with a couple of students - it is amazing how far the blood will squirt out when first done - the result is you do not lose your finger nail.
Had to do it to myself a few times over the years, both methods work.
In today's environment I suspect I would take a pass on the poor student and be forced to watch him suffer.
