My '65 W300 exhibited 1 of your symptoms; turn on headlights and the engine quit. Shut off headlights, started and ran fine. The problem was the ground between the cab and frame/battery. My truck had a braided cable between the engine block and the cab. The bolt holding the cable to the cab was the culprit.
