It been about 12 years or so but I believe I used an awl in place of the marlinspikes and then small vice grips and needle nose pliers.
The best thing I did is place the base of the thimble sitting upright in the vice, then had the cable going straight up to an eye bolt on the ceiling. This helped keep everything aligned while I wove the Flemish Eye with the clamp over it. The clamp hid most of the braid. It was my first go at it but it has held up well
