I do however use a marlin spike when I weave fibrous ropes. This is an image of one of my Grandfather's ropes, now serving duty in my lovely bride's laundry room.

The rope begins out of the image to the left, travels on out of the image to the right, around several pulleys, and back into the image where the loose end is woven back into itself. I finish off the locations where the rope enters itself as well as where the dead horse ends (within the center of the rope) with wraps of piano wire. This finishes off any fraying strands in the old rope kind of like using a Safe-Line clamp on a wire rope.
