As a man that, like you guys, has been around machinery, cars, restorations, etc. for decades, I'm ashamed of the following:
I was replacing a 6in grinding wheel on by bench grinder. The wheel was a bit snug towards the secure point where I could then snug it down with the 2 allen key screws. Sooooo, I gave it a few light taps with a brass drift/ball pein hammer. You guessed it. As soon as I hit the switch, the coarse wheel obliterated itself at 3500rpm and smashed into my face. I had safety glasses and gloves on, but my cheek still has the scar from that wheel striking me.
