Clint, I read that Henry Ford had suppliers send their deliveries to the Ford factories in specific species and dimensions pallets or dunnage, so workers could uncrate parts and send the lumber to the wood shop, to be cut and used in building of parts for his vehicles.
Guess if he saved $ per vehicle he could keep costs low.
I have an old school desk made in +/-1930"s where they joined two boards together with the narrow end of one to the wider end of another. Easier and saves material over ripping to make parallel edges.
