I purchased a 20 foot 14ooo pound tilt bed trailer and had purchased a Smittybuilt winch for it. After reading the literature that came with it I was surprised when they said their winces are for recovery and using for trailering voids the warranty! I needed a winch that was designed for loading AND offloading vehicles. Here is a question I posed to eTrailer regarding the Bullydog winch. I also included the link to the conversation. Also, I would recommend wire because the synthetic frayed after only a few loads.

Does the Bulldog Winch BDW66FR Have an Automatic Brake While Extending and Retracting?
Question:
I had purchased a SittyBuilt 12k winch for use on my new 12k tilt car trailer only to learn that it is NOT recommended for trailer use and that trailer use voids their warranty. As surprised as i was I was pleased that they allowed a full return and all I was responsible for was return shipping. So I learned that a winch used on a trailer needs to have dual braking protection is both directions so I wanted to make certain that the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch - Wire Rope - Roller Fairlead - 9,800 lbs is suitable for loading and off-loading pickup trucks from my 20 foot tilt bed trailer that is new?

I spoke to Bulldog Winch and they did confirm the Bulldog Winch # BDW66FR does have an automatic brake as soon as the button is let off. This will work while being extended or retracted."
